Citi Unveils “Once Per Lifetime Language” for Strata Cards

Key takeaway

Are you ready to navigate Citi’s new credit card rules before your next application?

Highlights

  • Citi’s Strata credit card now features a pop-up alerting ineligibility for sign-up bonuses before application.
  • The alert helps applicants avoid hard pulls for credit checks when they’re unlikely to receive bonuses.
  • Citi has introduced “once-in-a-lifetime” bonus eligibility terms, replacing the previous 1/48 rule.
  • The new eligibility rules apply specifically to the Strata card lineup, not affecting other Citi cards.

[2026.10 Update]

Citi has introduced a pop-up for its Strata credit card lineup that warns you if you’re ineligible for the sign-up bonus before you proceed with your application. This could be because you’ve previously held the card or because of your history of opening and closing Citi credit cards.

Getting a heads-up about bonus eligibility before a hard pull is a welcome improvement. It’s certainly better than applying only to find out afterward that you won’t get the bonus.

That said, given Citi’s notoriously bad IT, don’t assume you’re guaranteed to receive the sign-up bonus just because you don’t see a pop-up.

[2026.9 Original Post]

Citi has suddenly changed its welcome bonus eligibility terms, introducing AmEx-style “once-in-a-lifetime” language. Here’s an example from the Citi Strata Premier:

New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.

This new “once-in-a-lifetime” restriction replaces the previous Citi 1/48 rule, which required you to wait 48 months after receiving a welcome bonus before earning another bonus on the same card.

For now, the new terms only affect the Strata lineup:

Other Citi cards are not affected at this time.

Currently, this once-in-a-lifetime restriction is card-specific: holding or having held one Strata card does not affect your welcome bonus eligibility for the other cards in the lineup.
